[Premium] On helicopter drops and wealth confiscation in Europe

Hugh Hendry made some remarks about confiscation last week that I addressed in my TV appearance on RT’s capital account (see video here). The gist of his comments was that he fears government’s ability to confiscate wealth as a means of dealing with the economic crisis in Europe. On RT, I said that I didn’t think the situation had reached that point in Europe and so I was not overly concerned. But I do want to flag comments by a major bank economist that touch on these issues

On the Collapse of the Shanghai Composite

Shanghai’s channel surfing Panda bears are speaking with a little higher pitch this weekend after getting their ‘hood caught in a vicious squeeze and reversal. The stock index has bounced 8.7 percent off its January 6th lows after falling 31 percent from last April’s 12-month high. The Shanghai was down 39 percent from its August ‘09 post-crash high before reversing earlier this month. Hugh Hendry nailed it

The date when it was first obvious that Greece would default: a timeline of the Greek debt crisis

I was going through my archives to figure out when I first started saying Greece would default and it made for interesting reading as a chronology of the sovereign debt crisis. For me, the pivotal post that signalled default was inevitable was the one entitled “Video: Stiglitz and Hendry debate the Greek bailout” from 10 February 2010. It was from a broadcast the night we learned of the debt concealment in Greece. Take a look at the video from that post below. I’ll follow it with a brief chronology

Hugh Hendry on the economy and the sovereign debt crisis

We’ve reached a very rare moment in economic history where the problem is greater than the ability of the politicians to respond

“Don’t listen to Hugh Hendry. He’s a loser.”

Below is a nice little interview with Hedge Fund manager Hugh Hendry . The headline quote was his way of showing us he doesn’t take himself too seriously. But his underlying message is that he believes it pays to really massage the most contentious issues and take a view on those. If you do have a contrarian view, it will be backed by more rigorous analysis such that you can be better assured of a decent return in down markets. Right now, one of his most contrarian bets is Japan

Hendry: May Be Making ‘Error of Judgement’ on China

by Edward Harrison Back this past September, Hugh Hendry spoke with Bloomberg’s Kevin Crowley about investment strategies, financial regulation and the role of hedge funds. Bloomberg has just released the video and I recommend watching. Hendry has made a name via his sometimes strident and bombastic appearances in the media. This particular conversation was a

Hendry: There Are No Policy Remedies for Debt Deflation

Hugh Hendry is back writing after a long hiatus. His latest commentary to investors makes for good reading. His thesis: we are in a world of debt deflation for which there are no policy remedies; the Fed is fighting an uphill battle and it will lose. Long-time readers will now I agree with the thrust

Jim Chanos makes the bearish case on China

Fortune recently did a story on Jim Chanos called "Chanos vs. China" which warrants reading.  Below is the associated video in which you can hear Chanos making the bearish case for China. Chanos is the most unapologetic and aggressive of the well-known bears about his case. For example, Andy Xie seems to have backpedalled somewhat

Video: Hugh Hendry on UK growth prospects on BBC’s QuestionTime

Here’s a good town hall-style video featuring Simon Schama and Hugh Hendry on BBC QuestionTime. The ever-combative Hendry gave his opinion on the prospects for the UK economy going forward from the Austerian viewpoint. He said that he doubts whether the private sector has the dynamism to carry the country forward economically as the government

Hugh Hendry interview on the BBC

BBC HARDtalk interviewed hedge fund manager Hugh Hendry, CIO & CEO of Eclectica Asset Management, this past Tuesday night. The videos are below

Hugh Hendry on Euro Outlook and George Soros

Hugh Hendry opines on strategy, George Soros and the euro. He believes the euro "is finished" for many of the same reasons I worry about the euro zone – namely that it acts like a deflationary gold standard for euro zone members. Here’s the problem in Europe.  The euro has acted as an internal gold
