"Second, Americans are not used to the concept of 12% unemployment or 10% rates for extended periods. That is going to cause a serious backlash across the political spectrum. Couple that with the discomfort over $1.5-trillion deficits and there could be some serious political changes in the coming years. I think the message will be more anti-incumbent than one party or the other."

Typically, that is not the pattern American voters manifest when they are angry. Political anger in this country is decidedly inarticulate and unsophisticated. Having been nourished on the lie that there are real differences between the parties, and ostensibly incapable of adding two and two when it comes to the reality of lobbyist ownership of Congress and the Presidency, most will simply vote for the "outs". It would do them little good if they were to do otherwise by selecting out incumbents for punishment in any case. The system simply anticipates and neutralises such tactics with corrupting lobbies buying both sides of any contested district and with whore politicians more than eager to accept campaign contribution bribes whether they are incumbents or challengers.

Sustained 13% unemployment just might have unforseen consequences politically, however. A starving man may come to realize that he has absolutely no stake in the political system as it presents itself to him, one that it is entirely concerned with someone else's welfare and not his own. Men like this may organize, demonstrate en masse and strike to bring an economy like this - as unresponsive to them as it is - to a complete standstill. And here springs hope: That an end will be brought to the thieving and the lying and that a restoration of a lost democracy might bring a cessation of war, economic justice for the least among us, and public trial for the coterie of whores and whore masters that have left so many of us in destitution.
