Ed - to quote you with a change or 2. "The U.K. economy cannot possibly work itself out of the greatest financial crisis in some 70-odd years in a mere year and then expect to raise taxes on the middle class without a major recessionary relapse."

Politicians will always take the path of least resistance. If we think things are dire in the U.S., look at the U.K. and be thankful. At least you've just had your election. We have to have ours sometime in the next 18 months or so. Having shown the world the way to salvation with his marvellous leadership, wee Gordie Brown is in desperate denial about his part in anything that could have led to our dire straits -"it's the fault of the U.S" or "the pound fell by over 25% cos Georgie-boy Osborn then said it might fall further". He will screw the economy the extra few % that's escaped him so far, in order to try and get re-elected with the unfulfilled promise that his actions alone will somehow save the country from his previous incompetence. And the sad fact is that the people seem to be starting to think that he is a relatively safe pair of hands.
Looks like we may have a George Bush mark 2 on our hands.
