As the possibility of bankruptcy draws nearer, General Motors is moving to sell non-core assets and to broker arrangements with bondholders and unions alike which will keep it out of bankruptcy. In a 9AM press conference today, new General Motors head Fritz Henderson announced a debt-for-equity swap offer for GM bondholders which would cut [...]

German Press: Fiat to sign a deal with Opel, not Chrysler
Apr
I want to make clear the significance of the Treasury’s Chapter 11 bankruptcy plan for Chrysler if Fiat pulls out. It will mean massive job losses and and a huge down-tick in consumer demand. There will be no second half recovery. Geithner and Obama will look very much like greenhorns and lose a lot of [...]
Scene from the new film ‘Monsters vs. Aliens’

I hope you all have a great weekend. Here is a clip from a new film you might want to take the kids to see.
Enjoy.
A conversation about the film ‘Duplicity’ on Charlie Rose
Mar
I saw this film at the weekend and thought it was brilliant. I highly recommend seeing it. And if you are in an especially ornery frame of mind because of AIG and the bailouts, the film does have a nice villanous corporate angle as well.

David Rosenberg and Richard Bernstein to leave BOA

Merrill’s Economic Research team has been top notch for years under the leadership of Richard Bernstein and David Rosenberg. Unfortunately for Bank of Aerica, these two gentlemen are jumping ship now that Merrills has been taen over by BOA. I look forward to hearing more from them in their new roles elsewhere.

Walt Mossberg says Apple’s new browser Safari is fast
Mar
Apple Safari 4 is out and it’s slick and lightning fast. Most people are still using Internet Explorer, which quite frankly does not meet the grade. Firefox, which I had been using, has huge memory bloat if you leave the browser open for too long. Very disappointing.
For me, right now it is [...]
Twitter founder Evan Williams on Charlie Rose
Mar
Everyone is using Twitter these days. Econbloggers are getting in the spirit too. I have started to use it. I know Paul Kedrosky uses it. Even Yves Smith is thinking of getting in on it, although her inner luddite holds her back. So what is Twitter all about?
Watch the video with Twitter CEO and co-Founder Evan Williams to find out. By the way, Williams also co-founded Blogger before selling it to Google. He is one heck of an Internet mogul.

‘Slumdog’ cleans up at the Oscars
Feb
Right now I am trying to forget that we are back to 1997 levels on the market. So, I am posting this WSJ clip about the Oscars. Overall, I guessed 4 out of 7 of the big categories right.
It was the best show in years with “Slumdog Millionaire,” a brilliant film, winning Best Picture.
