Geraldine Ferraro has finally resigned for her racially-charged diatribes about Barack Obama. Her resignation statement wasn’t an admission of guilt or contrition about the scandal now engulfing the Clinton campaign:
Dear Hillary –
I am stepping down from your finance committee so I can speak for myself and you can continue to speak for yourself about what is at stake in this campaign.
The Obama campaign is attacking me to hurt you. I won’t let that happen.
Thank you for everything you have done and continue to do to make this a better world for my children and grandchildren.
You have my deep admiration and respect.
Gerry
Ferraro was just interviewed by Ann Curry for NBC Nightly News and was her usual unrepentant self. She said she is not affiliated with the Clinton campaign and was using her “first amendment rights” by making her remarks about Obama. Ferraro indicated that she was giving a paid speech and addressing the historic nature of the Obama run in a similar vein to her own historic run as the first woman VP candidate in 1984. But she went on to say that the Obama campaign was using the “race card.” And this would be the “last time” they could do so and get away with it in her opinion.
Well, in my opinion, her comments are pretty difficult to defend. She is obviously politically tone deaf if she continues to defend herself in this way. My advice: say I apologize if I offended anyone and move on.
